Is it worth using Google Trends and what is the Alternative?

Without knowing the trends that appear in society from time to time, we are not able to create an effective business idea. Market reconnaissance is one of the basic activities that will allow us to “lighten the subject” and create the foundations for future business.

Yes, we can be very lucky and find the right fit for our client’s needs without using professional analytical tools. However, such a situation is rare. Intuition can be unreliable, and hard statistics are almost always able to show us the right way.

A Tool for Special Tasks

Google Trends has been launched with a view to users planning to reach the target group, for whom getting to know the market is crucial.

The service is a gigantic database, invaluable in the context of sales and service market research. Do you want to check what are the most popular keywords in recent times? If so, Google Trends is for you.

In this article we are going to take a look at the tool from Google’s wings. This entry will show you how to easily search for Internet trends. We wonder if Google Trends is worth the effort or if it’s better to use other, twin tools designed for marketing.

What is Google Trends and what is it useful for?

Google Trends is a functionality supported by the giant Google. It is not another kind of search engine, or a replacement for the traditional, old Google.

The tool is a specific database containing information about issues and phrases typed by users in the most popular search engine in the world. The database has been constantly expanded since 2004.

This means that by using Google Trends we can also check historical trends from times gone by. For us, as internet users, Google Trends is a great tool for content marketing. As users, we can check which exact data, topics, and tags are most popular at any given time.

We also get an aggregated value of search results for a given phrase. Using “Google Trends,” however, we won’t find out exactly how many people are tempted to type a given search term into the search box.

Unlimited Analysis Options

An additional option is the ability to refine the search criteria. Thus, we can check the current trends with quite a high level of locational precision, also based on the criteria of the topic category.

Thanks to Google Trends we can find out with almost surgical precision what topics are sexy in different parts of the world. The potential that lies dormant in “Google’s child” is enormous. We can easily learn about search trends in real time or by referring to a selected period.

How does Google Trends work? Data Acquisition from YT and Google News

Google Trends has been collecting Google search results since 2004. The collected information is theoretically anonymous, however the company recognizes also information about e.g. user’s approximate location.

This allows to quite roughly determine whether a given person belongs to a particular target group. Google Trends does not have time or location restrictions. The data is obtained in a global way.

What is more, the tool uses data collected by other services, i.e. YouTube and Google News.

Using a sample, not the Whole Database

Searching across all the resources that have been collected in the Google Trends resource would be breakneck. It would take an extremely long time to compute a single short phrase.

How, then, can such a precise analysis be achieved without the use of the entire Google Trends resource? As the creators themselves emphasize, the process of data analysis is based on using small samples of searches.

This allows for maximal reduction of waiting time for the result. On the other hand, the sample is fully representative, so the results are fully reliable – no matter what the search query is related to.

Google Trends how to use to get Valuable Analysis?

Google Trends analysis is intuitive and extremely simple, even for someone not particularly familiar with the topic.

As we mentioned earlier, Google Trends recognizes the most frequently searched phrases and keywords that were previously “massively” typed into the Google search engine.

The Google Trends website is simplified and devoid of unnecessary add-ons.

The study starts after entering a specific phrase in the banner, which we want to find out about its popularity. Thus, we can treat Google Trends in many ways.

Analyzing Google Search Data. What do you need it for?

On the one hand, it can be a useful business tool that will show us precise Google statistics, including daily search trends.

Thanks to this knowledge we will gain an insight into the popularity of a given keyword, already present in the online space.

This will allow us to find out which topics are the most popular and which are no longer of interest to Internet users.

Can Google Trends be an Entertainment Tool?

On the other hand, it is a tool that will allow us to settle disputes, including philosophical ones, related to a given topic.

Google Trends in this context can be an interesting, engaging game, broadening our mental horizons.

As we can see, the use of Google Trends in practice can be various.

Above all, however, it is something that allows us to examine such values as the popularity of a phrase, the number of searches for a keyword or the keywords of greatest interest at a given moment.

Google Trends Functionality. What to hang your eye on?

Getting results from Google Trends is not difficult. After typing in a relevant phrase, you will get the following graph indicating the popularity of the phrase.

Interpretation of the results is made easier because of the Google Trends algorithm, which prioritizes phrases based on their “being trending”. We can also use templates available on the Google Trends homepage.

The user gains the ability to support themselves with:

  • The Year in Search feature – which is an annual summary of the most popular phrases typed into Google by users from around the world;
  • Google News Initiative, which is a portal of support and learning in the context of getting to know Google tools;
  • phrases that have been recently gaining popularity – Google almost immediately suggests ready topics that ignite the attention of Internet users in real-time.

It is worth emphasizing that the site is extremely clear and intuitive to use. To reach it, type “Google Trends” into Google or simply click on

How Google Trends works in practice. Example of Keyword Popularity

To further illustrate the situation regarding the use of Google Trends, let’s take an example.

Suppose that we would like to deal with the sale of electric devices, and our “specialty” would be given electric vehicles allowed in urban traffic.

We can check if in the given region Internet users are even slightly interested in the topic.

Verifying the popularity of phrases we get, in a nutshell, the general interest in the topic.

We type the phrase “electric scooters” in the Google Trends search engine window and press the magnifying glass button.

We see a graph, a map of Poland, and several other headings, such as popularity of the topic and similar queries.

In the upper part of the analysis we can specify additional criteria.

Analysis of the received results. Google Trends How to use the Highlighted Data?

The graph shows that the keyword “electric scooters” was most popular at the turn of July and August. No wonder: good weather, high temperatures and the holiday season are conducive to recreation.

Just below we see that the phrase is most popular in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. The least interest, on the other hand, is observed in Podlasie.

Additional Search Data

Even below we see similar topics that are somehow related to the topic of electric scooters. Among them there is “scooter” with the value of +200% indicating a fairly rapid gain in popularity.

The analysis allowed us to examine the popularity of the keywords. The winning keyword in the context of scooters is the phrase “electric scooters wrocław”.

From the Google Trends keyword analysis we get the knowledge what are the most popular keywords in the searched topic.

What is Popularity Value? Search Data in Google Trends

It is worth to have a closer look at Google Trends charts, because thanks to them we can see which periods have the highest phrase popularity.

In the case of electric scooters, the phrase was more popular at the end of July and the beginning of August. In this context, we talk about sales seasonality. In terms of time, we obtain only residual data, containing values from 0 to 100.

Less Precision without Loss of Quality

This means that Google Trends will not inform us about the precise number of users searching for a given keyword. Such precise Google trends would require exploration of the whole, huge database.

Therefore, Google Trends shows us popularity in a given period, and we have to guess how many people are interested in a given topic. To a large extent, we get a simplified picture of the situation.

Advantages of using Google Trends

Google Trends is a useful tool for developing a content marketing plan. If we are the creators of an online blog, or we want to enter the market with a new product, then the above Google tool will be our “third hand” in effectively identifying the environment.

The tool allows us to understand how Google trends are shaping for a specified keyword. Moreover, the tool’s panel allows for keyword exploration in different countries, making Google Trends a global tool.

Seven “pros” points

  1. Google Trends can inspire. Check out trends and the most trending topics in different regions. Based on the information obtained, you can create valuable content, targeting the reader interested in the content.
  2. With Google Trends, you will learn about the seasonality of a particular good. It applies to almost every industry. In some periods, the demand for a particular good increase, while in others it decreases.
  3. Google Trends provides quite extensive and fully sufficient data for the initial business reconnaissance. Thus, we will check the value of searches for given keywords and their popularity.
  4. Google Trends provides useful information, interesting topics and suggests similar queries in any time frame. The search term will help us in SEO activities on our website. It will help us choose the right keywords. We will find out which phrases are most popular at the moment and what content the web users need most. We will also find a range of similar products and keywords, which many users synonymously associate with a particular issue.
  5. The tool determines Google trends in different regions, also in the context of Poland itself. You can check which phrases are the most popular among residents in a given area of Silesia, Mazowsze, or Podkarpacie – also with specifications for particular towns.
  6. Google Trends provides free help for your business, being an indispensable tool in your everyday work. Some trends change by the hour. Others are more static, but sooner or later they will correct themselves anyway. Google Trends keeps us in touch with the changing online reality.
  7. We can use Google Trends in so-called Google Shopping, or Google Shopping advertising campaigns. The tool has an overlay relating to the study of popular trends of a given keyword. If it is on an upward wave, it is worth using it in sales activities in advance.

Google Trends Shortcomings

It can be said that Google Trends is still in the development stage. The tool, apart from its obvious advantages, has some significant shortcomings that are worth being aware of.

Google Trends presents information in an aggregate and very general way. It is impossible to go into detail about what drove the users in question when they typed in a keyword.

Alzheimer’s casus. The popularity of a phrase can mean leads to several leads

Example? The keyword “alzheimer’s” is searched for more and more often in Google every year, taking into account the region of Poland.

We do not obtain information concerning what data the user searched for, or what information he finally came to.

Looking at the popularity chart, we could say that the number of Alzheimer’s patients in Poland is growing by leaps and bounds.

Someone else might claim that Poles do not suffer from this disease so often, and that the increase in the phrase’s popularity is connected with the greater medical awareness of internet users.

There is a certain dissonance here, which Google Trends cannot cope with. Second, Google ignores some of the search results, not collecting them for its database.

These are e.g. searches that follow one another, contain special characters or occur very rarely.

While the popularity of the most popular trends is easy to check, starting with some products that are innovative and not obvious, with a high degree of certainty we will not get a good and effective analysis.

Alternative Analytical Tools for Creating Content Marketing

The popularity of online marketing is growing steadily. Analytical tools are extremely valuable in the context of developing a good marketing plan.

However, in the context of researching trends in marketing, we are not doomed solely to Google Trends. Nevertheless, in our opinion, it’s worth trying out the “Google” trend mining feature, if only for its unquestionable usability advantages.

Although this tool is extremely popular and easy to use, there are quite a few users of other analytical portals.

Among the most well-known programs we can highlight:

  • Senuto,
  • Lucky Orange,
  • Screaming Frog,
  • Brightedge,
  • SEMRush,
  • Matomo,
  • Answerthepublic,
  • Soovle,
  • Spyfu,
  • KW Finder,
  • MySiteAuditor,
  • Sistrix,
  • and many, many more.
